For the tech giant, FY2025 was a record year.

So what’s driving Microsoft’s growth?

Let’s dive into the tech giant’s numbers to understand the full picture.

In case you missed my recent posts:

1. FY2025 was a record year for Microsoft

Microsoft reported over US$281 billion in revenue for its FY2025 results. This was up 15% y/y.

Operating income was reported at US$128 billion, up 17% y/y. The company highlighted heavy investments to the “expansive opportunity ahead”.

In fact, 2Q2025 was their largest quarter for the fiscal year. The earlier quarter’s total revenue was US$76.4 billion, up 18%. Meanwhile operating income was up 23% y/y.

2. Cloud & AI are the twin engines of growth

Cloud and AI are the company’s major growth drivers. This is much like its other tech counterparts such as Amazon and Google for instance.

Its CEO Satya Nadella said: “Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector.”

The numbers paint this picture well. Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform already crossed US$75 billion in revenue for the year. This is a 34% growth.

Now, Azure sits within the wider Microsoft Cloud umbrella of products. And Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud and Dynamic 365 are other products within this group.

For its earlier quarter, Microsoft Cloud products brought in US$46.7 million in revenue. This was up 27% y/y.

That said, the company is investing back into the series of products. And behind these numbers sit a clear strategy: Turn every Azure region into an AI-first infrastructure.

During FY2025, Microsoft also launched the Azure AI Foundry. This helps their customers design, customize and manage AI applications and agents at scale.

3. Productivity and Cloud Lead the Pack

Microsoft’s revenue engine can be divided into three segment:

First, its Productivity and Business Processes, followed by Intelligent Cloud. These two segments contribute the large majority of revenue, with a combined share of over 80%.

More Personal Computing makes up the remaining share of the pie.

Among these segments, Intelligent Cloud saw the highest revenue growth rate at 26% y/y. This segment includes server products and cloud services revenue.

Hence, its growth rate is shaped by the tremendous growth in Azure and other cloud services.

For the quarter, revenue was US$299 billion. Operating income grew by 23% y/y, reaching ~US$12.1 billion

Productivity and Business Processes is the largest segment by revenue share.

It contributed US$33 billion in revenue, at a 16% y/y growth rate. Within the segment, Dynamics 365 had the largest growth rate of 23%. Meanwhile, Microsoft 365 Consumer cloud revenue grew by 20%.

Both its January price increase and a subscriber growth of 8% to 89 million drove this.

More Personal Computing was the slowest growing segment at 9% y/y. This was driven by Search and news advertising and Gaming.

Highlights include the Search and news advertising revenue, excluding traffic acquisition cost, growing by 21%. This is owed to higher search volume and revenue per search.

4. What to watch next

Following Microsoft’s FY2025 results, management expects double-digit growth in both its revenue and operating income for the following year.

Put it this way, the company will continue to invest in cloud and AI offerings. Operating margins are predicted to remain relatively unchanged.

For next quarter, the Intelligent Cloud segment is expected to surpass current quarter results. Expectations for this were between $30.1 billion to $30.4 billion.

The company foresees Azure to drive this, given present strong demand signals.

On the other hand, revenue for Productivity and Business Processes is expected to dip to US$32.2 to $32.5 billion.

This trend is also predicted for the More Personal Computing segment, which the company expects revenue to be between US$12.4 to US$12.9 billion.

5. Microsoft shares hitting all-time peak

Today, shares of Microsoft trade at its all-time peak. A day after its earlier earnings results, the stock closed out at ~$533 following an opening jump of nearly 8%.

Following this, Microsoft’s market cap broke the $4 trillion valuation mark. Here’s my take:

First, Microsoft has performed consistently throughout the year. It ended the fiscal year strong with stellar results and beat expectations for the closing quarter.

Its top two revenue segments exceeded outlook ranges by at least 14%.

Consistency in these strong results are backed by Microsoft’s user engagement metrics. This is especially in the AI rollout that it’s investing heavily into.

Within the quarter, the company reported crossing the 100 million monthly active user mark for their family of copilot apps.

When it comes to AI features across products, they’ve counted over 800 million monthly active users.

Amidst the bets that they are taking, the company is also focused on efficiency. This is across its AI and cloud suites, and is translating into actual impacts on their margins.

My final thoughts

Microsoft is growing steadily in the cloud and AI race. The numbers are clear.

Its core suite of products positions it well in the AI race. It has a large 365 customer base to roll out their products to.

Given bets it’s taking on its infrastructure stack, it’s clear the tech giant is keen on maximising opportunities.

Given its outlook, they’ve set themselves up for a steady start to FY26. I believe we’ll continue to see Microsoft performing well for their fiscal year ahead.
